GPS Surveys

Background

Surveying and Mapping Consultants (SMC) has utilized Global Positioning System (GPS) technology as part of its conventional instrumentation since the company’s inception in 1989. Today, GPS technology is considered an essential tool to provide a variety of positioning data for a wide range of projects.

Technology/Methodology

Dual frequency geodetic receivers are utilized to establish control networks for a variety of mapping or utility inventory projects. Both dual frequency Real Time Kinematic (RTK) and differential GPS (DGPS) methods are used to locate utility structures for implementation of the utility layers in townwide GIS mapping programs. When RTK methods are used, SMC’s technical staff will establish several base stations on municipal buildings. These base stations transmit the differential corrections to the roving GPS receivers during the project and can be used by the municipality for future surveying projects.

Value Added Services

In addition to the structure location surveys, SMC’s team can obtain invert elevations, pipe sizes and other pertinent structure information for sewer and drain structures. Many of our clients combine these data together with digital structure photographs into a GIS system.

Following is a list of utility inventory surveys that SMC’s staff has successfully completed utilizing GPS surveying techniques:

  • East Providence, RI

  • Quincy, Massachusetts

  • Gloucester, Massachusetts

  • Walpole, Massachusetts

  • Raynham/Taunton GIS, Massachusetts

  • Framingham, Massachusetts

  • Billerica, Massachusetts
